Lowell High School Carney Medalists 2009


Katelyn Burgess
is the class Valedictorian.  She is the daughter of Kimberly and Thomas Burgess.  Katelyn entered Lowell High School from St. Micheal’s and the Sacred Heart School.  A member of our Latin Lyceum, Katelyn has always taken the most challenging academic program.  She has taken courses through the Virtual High School and through the Dual Enrollment Program with the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  In addition to maintaining an excellent academic record, Katelyn has also been active in our student organizations that include the National Honor Society, the Environmental Club and Student Council.  As a seven-season member of the Crew Team and as Team Captain, Katelyn demonstrated a willingness to work hard with a natural leadership style.  Katelyn will attend Dartmouth College in the fall where she will major in biology.


Stephanie Klinkenberg
is the class Salutatorian.  The daughter of Maria Ramirez, Stephanie graduated from the Franco American School.  Stephanie has used her independence and confidence to excel in the Lowell High Latin Lyceum Program.  She received an “A” in each of eight AP level courses she took at Lowell High.  Stephanie is an active member of the crew team, a SCORE peer mediator, a certified tutor, a mentor and a writer for the school newspaper.  Lowell High School has rarely seen a student with such genuine care and desire to do whatever it takes to assist the less fortunate.  One of Stephanie’s many goals in life is to become a neurosurgeon and perform surgeries for the poor.  In fact, Stephanie wants to dedicate her life to helping the needy not only medically, but with housing and food programs as well.  Stephanie was accepted to Harvard University, Dartmouth College and Brown University.  She will attend Harvard University in the fall where she will major in neuroscience.

Punam Patel is the daughter of Ashvin and Usha Patel.  She attended the Dr. An Wang Middle School and the Joseph A. McAvinnue Elementary School.  While at Lowell High School, Punam pursued our rigorous Latin Lyceum Program which included Advanced Placement, High Honors and Honors level courses as well as Duel Enrollment with the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  In addition to maintaining an excellent academic record, Punam has also been an active member of the National Honor Society, International Language Club, and played varsity soccer for two years and ran outdoor track for three years.  She also volunteered at the D’Youville Manor Nursing Home, Walk for Cancer Care and Walk for Alzheimer’s disease and worked part-time for the past two years.  Those who know Punam know her to be a truly outstanding young lady who exemplifies the best in today’s high school students.  Her quiet, unassuming and relaxed manner, her strong set of values and her genuine concern for others have earned her the respect of her teachers as well as her peers.  Punam’s goal is to become a medical doctor and she will attend Boston University this fall and major in biology.

Nicholas Clark is the son of Richard and Elaine Clark.  Nicholas attended the Saint Louis Elementary School before entering Lowell High School.  Nicholas has always challenged himself academically.  He has been a four-year member of Lowell High’s Latin Lyceum and has consistently taken courses at the High Honors and Advanced Placement levels.  It should be noted that Nicolas obtained scores of 5 on the AP Calculus AB and AP Biology Exams and 4 on the AP US History Exam.  Nicholas has also achieved recognition as a member of the National Honor Society and has earned Honor Roll and High Honor Roll standing for the past four years.  In addition to being an outstanding student, Nicholas is a valuable member of our student body and community as a whole.  He has participated in various organizations, including the Language and Science clubs and was President of the Environmental Club.  He strongly believes in protecting the environment and took on an active role in Lowell High School’s recycling program.  Nicholas is also passionate about giving back to his community.  He exemplifies Lowell High School’s quest for academic excellence and citizenry.  Nicholas plans on attending Northeastern University majoring in biology.  His long-term goals include medical research and achieving his doctoral degree.

Nicholas Palladino, graduate of the Franco American School, is the son of Deborah and Bob Palladino.  Nicholas has consistently challenged himself by taking the most rigorous academic program available.  In fact, during his high school career, he has completed seven A.P. level courses, including five Umass Lowell dual enrollment classes.  This is testament to Nicholas’s extraordinary drive to learn.  In addition to his academic achievements, Nicholas has also been active in the Science Club, the Ballroom Dancing Club, and the Chess Club.  Those who know Nicholas will agree that this humble, calm, intelligent and determined young man is truly remarkable.  Hard work and determination paid off and the Palladino family is proud to see that Nicholas will attend the Ohio State University in the fall where he will major in Biochemistry with the eventual goal of attending medical school.

Warren Anderson is the son of Mr and Mrs David Anderson.  He went to the J.G. Pyne Elementary School and the Butler Middle School.  During his four years at Lowell High School, Warren consistently pursued his personal educational goals by taking honors, high honors and Advanced Placement classes.  Warren was inducted into the National Honor Society in his junior year.  Warren has been actively involved in school and community activities.  Warren has been a member of Boy Scouts for the past four years, College Upward Bound Program, the International Language Club, the Artbotics Summer Program at the Revolving Museum during summer 2008, and volunteered more than 100 hours working at St. William Church.  Warren has been an outstanding, intelligent, strong, and compassionate young man who is a valued member of our school community.  Warren is an honorable and loyal friend to many of his peers and has proved himself ready for a new challenge.  Warren has been accepted to Boston University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Northeastern University, Stonehill College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  In the fall, he will matriculated at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and study Computer Science.
